Optimo (Espacio) - Fabric 52 - Review

Optimo present the latest in a long line of ever-eclectic Fabric mixes that shoehorns house, techno, disco and everything in between in a tatty pair of sticky, beer-stained brogues. I should also report that water is wet, Glasgow skies are grey and that Friedrich Nietschze wasn't a church going man. So, what’s so special about the 52nd edition? For a start, quixotic track selections abound: Fad Gadget’s Lady Shave and its voyeuristic, flasher-at-the-funfair imploration for girls to “shave it; shave it shave it shave it!” sets the tone for a flurry of playful house hooks, globetrotting rhythms (Shacalao) and rough cyborg sex (Love Technique). Not everything is wilfully weird, though; Optimo aim squarely for the dancefloor with a mix that also makes room for Kompakt darling Matias Aguayo and Basic Channel classic Q1.1. Having just called time on their 12 year-long residency at Sub Club, Optimo have produced a timely distillation of why Monday morning hangovers will be sorely missed.
